My website is slow and I want someone to speed it up for me

There are many reasons why your website can be slow

From servers that are slow to respond, to poorly-coded themes, to using too many plugins — there are many reasons why your website can be slow. And as you know, slow websites are bad for business:

  • you spend too long updating them — and despair!
  • your customers get frustrated by the slowness — and leave!
  • the tiniest delay in page load can cause a big decline in conversion
  • slow websites also rank lower in search engines than their faster competitors

So if you’ve got a slow website, it’s no wonder you want to speed it up.

How do I speed up my website?

The quickest way for me to offer the right help is to take a look at your site.

When you tell me about your website, please tell me:

  1. your website address
  2. which parts of your site are slow
  3. the website address of your hosting company
  4. the hosting package you use
  5. how you’ve measured the slowness of your website

I’ll run a quick analysis of your site and email you some advice.

My website is hard to use on a small screen

It’s more important than ever before that your website is easy to use on every size of screen — particularly on mobile phones.

In 2024, more than half of website traffic comes from mobile devices† so if your site is hard to use, you’re losing out on business. The term for websites that work on all device sizes is Responsive Website Design (RWD) and I’ve been building sites using an RWD, mobile-first approach since 2012!

Would you like me to improve the design of your website for small screens? Get in touch.

If your website is running on WordPress already, I’ll be able to advise on the work required to update your website theme. If your site is built on another platform, I might be able to offer some suggestions — or worst-case scenario — I can let you know what would be involved to rebuild the site for WordPress.

When you tell me about your project, let me know:

  • your website address
  • if there are any specific tasks that are hard to complete on small screens
  • the budget and timescale for the project

My website gets lots of traffic, but not enough sales

It sounds like you have a conversion problem*.

Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is the process of increasing the number of website visitors who complete a certain action. The action will vary depending on your business goals, but here are some common goals:

  • increase the number of sales
  • increase the number of leads generated
  • increase the number of newsletter sign ups

These primary goals can be broken down into multiple smaller steps, and each step in the process of achieving the goal can be optimised individually.

One classic CRO test is to adjust the number of steps in a process — some processes benefit from being spread across more steps, others benefit in having the number of steps reduced.

The Key is To Optimise the Right Thing

Effective CRO involves choosing the right thing to optimise — the one thing that will make the biggest difference.

Here’s how it typically works:

  • measure the current performance
  • design and carry out tests
  • measure the new performance
  • analyse the results and repeat the process

When you tell me about your project, please tell me:

  1. your website address
  2. what your business does
  3. the main action you want your customers to take
  4. the budget and timescale for your project

I can’t wait to hear from you.

*I’m assuming you make some sales through your website and that your conversion problem relates to your website design performance, not your business proposition.

A conversion problem could also be related to whatever it is you’re offering. If your offer isn’t compelling enough; at the right price; targeted at the right audience, no amount of tweaking your website design or altering the user experience will fix your problem.

My website isn’t showing up in search results

Firstly, let’s check a few things.

Visit Google and type site:designtwelve.co.uk (use your own domain name).

Do you see any results?

Yes — your site is indexed in Google

This is good news. Your site is discoverable and Google knows about it. However, your site might not be ranking for the keywords your customers are interested in.

Good SEO can take time (you might have to wait months to see the benefits of your SEO endeavours), but it’s all worthwhile. Once your site ranks for the correct keywords, you can get free traffic to your website.

Ask us about our SEO Partner
Our specialist SEO partner can carry out keyword research and provide you with a customised strategy to improve your rankings.

No — your site isn’t indexed in Google (yet)

Either your site is brand new OR there’s a technical reason that Google can’t find your site. If this is the case, get in touch and we’ll have a quick look for you.

There might be a simple technical reason for the problem. At the very least, I can give you some advice about where to look.

When you tell me about your project, please let me know:

  • your website address
  • when your website was launched
  • if your site is indexed in Google or not (based on the test above)

I’m starting a new business and need a website

Great — I’d love to design and build your website for you!

When you tell me about your project, please tell me:

  1. about your business
    • what will your business do?
    • are you a sole-trader or limited company?
    • how many of you are there?
    • what’s your target audience?
  2. what you want your website to do for your business
  3. the budget and timescale for the project

I’m thinking about building my website myself

Creating a new website — or updating an old one — is never as easy or as straight-forward as people will tell you. I’ve been doing this for years and years and I’m still learning new things, even today.

You might think creating a new website is going to be easy — it’s not.

You’re going to hit a few bumps in the road. You’re probably going to pull some of your hair out and you’ll definitely wonder why you started the whole thing in the first place.

So, don’t do it.

At least, don’t do it on your own.

Hire me to work with you.

I’ve spent the past 25 years learning the skills required to create an excellent website for your business. I can help you with everything you need to help grow and improve your business online.

Even if you love the idea of building your website, can you really justify the time to learn how to do it?

There are plenty of ‘no-code’ solutions for building websites that might tempt you down the ‘self-build’ route, but unless you’re a designer and a user experience specialist, how can you be sure that you’ll produce a website you’ll be proud of, that will work, and be fast?

Yes, you need a website for your business and yes — however you do it — it will take up a lot of your time.

But do you really want ‘building your website’ to be what you spend all of your time doing?

Or would you rather spend your time on the bit of the business you love?

The bit you were looking forward to doing, before you realised that you needed a website, and then realised that you were going to have to learn how to build one.

There are already so many hats to wear when you run your own business, ‘website designer’ doesn’t need to be one of them.

I can wear it for you.

When you tell me about your project, please tell me:

  • the address of your website (if you’ve started it already)
  • about you and your business
  • the goals for your website
  • the budget and timescale for your project

I’ve rebranded my business and I need to update my website to match

Great — I’d love to redesign your website to match your new branding!

When you tell me about your project, please tell me:

  1. your website address
  2. where we can see the new branding (social channels, etc)
  3. if there are any problems with your existing website that are not brand-related
  4. the budget and timescale for the project

I’m stuck and really need some advice

Being stuck sucks.

But it’s hardly surprising.

There have never been so many different ways to do things as there are today — and deciding on the best approach can be overwhelming. Paralysing, even.

Sometimes, just talking the problem through is all that’s needed for you to unstick yourself.

So, consider my ears — or is it eyes? — open.

Start telling me about your project and — you never know — you might find you unstick yourself before you press send.

I consult for several of my clients on their wider online businesses. I help troubleshoot issues, offer general guidance, and make recommendations for products and software to help in areas such as sales and marketing.

Sometimes, I’m just a friendly ear — and that’s all that’s needed. Other times, I make recommendations that have saved my clients hundreds of hours.

Never in my life did I think I’d utter the words, “I really enjoyed working on my website,” but that’s exactly what I’ve said after working with Sii

I worked very closely with him on systems and trackings so we could monitor performance in greater detail than ever before. He will always add fresh ideas during any build resulting in a better than expected end result.
